Nordic Quilt Festival in Aalborg, Denmark

18-20 May, 2012

By Gül Laporte

Every 3 years, the Scandinavian guilds – Denmark, Norway and Sweden plus Finland organize a long patchwork and quilting weekend in one of these 4 countries. In 2009, the Festival took place in Göteborg (Sweden); they had to organize it in no time, because at the last minute Finland couldn’t make it, as it was agreed previously.

Only a member belonging to one of the above mentioned guilds can exhibit a quilt or attend a class; however, the public is admitted to visit the exhibition or the commercial area.

Aalborg is a nice little town located on the Ocean; there is a large congress centre with hotel facilities nearby. In the congress centre 2 larges rooms were occupied, one by the vendors and the other by quilts, including the contest “Go further”. 76 quilts entered the competition, all accepted and shown. The jury had just to select the ones that according to its judgment deserved a prize.
There were also a good balance between tradition and contemporary work; Finish, Danish and Norwegian art quilt groups were also present; a good opportunity to see the kind of work that is made in Scandinavia.

Here are a selection of visuals and I hope you’ll enjoy them.
Exceptionally, the next Nordic Festival will take place in 2 years’ time in Norway (29 – 31 May, 2014) in Sarpsborg and I have been told that the neighbor town of Fredrikstad (10 km away) will also organize exhibitions in the old fortified part of the city. Perhaps a good opportunity to visit Norway and meet a lot of quilters?

A bientôt!
